Compositions
Orchestral
Sam’s orchestral writing focuses on shaping atmosphere and narrative through colour, harmony, and melodic line. Drawing on the expressive range of the orchestra, his work moves between intimate textures and full, expansive scoring, often evoking a strong sense of place or emotional landscape. This section features highlights of his orchestral work.
The Colours of Autumn evokes the warm, nostalgic feeling of autumn and the rich, indulgent colours of the trees turning gold and red. A piece inspired by the mid-century sound of Angela Morley, Robert Farnon and Richard Rodney Bennet.
First Flight is a piece that follows the journey of a bird leaving the nest and taking flight. Freely fluttering through lively forests in the springtime and soaring high above the landscape, it cinematic expression of a bird’s first flight
Ripples in the Sunlight is an orchestral imagining of sunlight playing upon water’s surface. Highly detailed orchestration creates a shimmering texture, emulating the way water glitters and sparkles in sunlight.
Chamber Music
The Sculpture Garden mirrors a serene walk through a garden full of artworks and sculptures. Tranquil and introspective, and at times dramatic, it shows the narrative power of more intimate ensembles. These excerpts were recorded by players of the Bristol Ensemble and conducted by Sam
Piano
These excerpts come from a set of piano pieces composed by Sam and are performed here by Antony Gray.
